A good inventory is the difference between a quick claim conversation and an argument you cannot win. It takes an afternoon, and it is easiest to do before the packers arrive.
What to record for each room
- Photograph the room wide, then each high-value item close up.
- Write the item, brand, model and serial number for electronics, tools and appliances.
- Note existing scratches, dents or damage on furniture.
- Mark anything you plan to hand-carry rather than ship.
High-value and fragile items
- Photograph with a note of the date.
- Keep receipts or purchase records for expensive pieces if you have them.
- Ask your transportation office how high-value items must be listed for your move.
At delivery
- Check the delivered items against your list before the crew leaves.
- Write damage and missing items on the paperwork you are given.
- Keep your own copy of everything you sign and take dated photos of damage.
